Instant Messaging (IM) is the concept of fast message exchange over the internet. There are numerous systems and protocols like ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger, to name the most popular.
An IM System generally consists of a couple (might be millions) of installed clients and one or more servers that are responsible for the message transfers form sender to receiver and the storage of messages for unavailable recipients.
A major difference to legacy messaging systems like email, IRC, write/talk aso. is the notion of 'presence'. Users are able to inform other users if they are online, offline, busy, away for a cup of coffee or the like.
